Welcome

We founded our charity with a simple proposition; film is a powerful educational tool. Not just to keep children still or to introduce media studies topics, but to bring alive subjects that can seem very remote from today's world. A huge part of this was our belief in the value of the cinematic experience.

That was in 1984. A time when less than half of UK households had VCRs, there wasn't any email, there were four television channels, satellite broadcasting was not available and everyone called each other on landlines. Never mind interactive white boards!

Today, the concept of 'rich media' in learning is ubiquitous. The options for using interactive content are astounding and there is no doubt that teachers can find a resource to cover almost any subject. But what about engagement?

If the feedback we receive from teachers is anything to go by, film still stands alone. Especially with the incredible pace of technological developments in recent years, how often does anyone sit still and focus on one thing for two full hours? That's part of the magic of film. Those two hours can seem like minutes. And they stay in the mind of the audience.

We've learnt a lot over the last 24 years. We try to put all of this knowledge into practice, so the teachers who use our materials can rely on a solid educational experience. We provide curriculum based learning materials, produce teacher training programmes, and run free screenings and events for schools. This includes National Schools Film Week a nationwide festival that was attended by 400,000 young people in 2008

Amongst all of these activities, we’ve also built this new website. We hope you enjoy using it.

"Film has without doubt the ability to move and entertain people in equal measure. The Festival showcases a wide range of films from around the world, giving students a wonderful insight into other cultures via the innovative programme. The masterclasses provide a unique platform for debate a crucial factor in understanding cinema culture."
